The National Average and State-by-State Variations
Most recent data from 2024 and 2025 places the average IQ in the United States at approximately 98 to 99.7. This is in line with the global standard, where 100 is the median score. IQ tests are designed so that about 68% of the population scores within one standard deviation of the mean, which is between 85 and 115.
However, as the data grid above demonstrates, a closer look reveals significant variations. States with a strong emphasis on education and access to resources—particularly in the Northeast and Upper Midwest—tend to have higher average IQ scores.
Factors Influencing IQ Scores in the USA
A person's IQ is not solely determined by genetics. A complex interplay of environmental and social factors contributes to cognitive development.
"Education appears to be the most consistent, robust, and durable method yet to be identified for raising intelligence."
Figure 2: Access to quality education is a primary driver of cognitive development.
The Role of Environment and Education
Education: This is arguably the most significant environmental factor. A comprehensive meta-analysis has shown that each additional year of schooling can be associated with an increase of one to five IQ points. The quality of schools, teacher training, and curriculum all play vital roles.
Higher Education Impact: States with elite universities often attract high-IQ individuals from around the world. See our full analysis of the Smartest Colleges in the US to see which schools are driving these numbers.
Socioeconomic Status (SES): Income and SES are also linked to IQ. Higher SES often translates to better access to resources, nutrition, healthcare, and a more stimulating learning environment from a young age.
Nutrition and Health: Proper nutrition, especially during early childhood development, is critical for brain health. Access to quality healthcare also plays a part in ensuring healthy cognitive development.
The Flynn Effect and a Potential Reversal
For much of the 20th century, a phenomenon known as the "Flynn effect" was observed, with raw IQ scores steadily increasing generation after generation. This rise was attributed to improvements in nutrition, healthcare, and education, as well as increasing societal complexity requiring more abstract thought.
However, a 2023 study from Northwestern University has indicated a potential "reverse Flynn effect" in the U.S. Analyzing data from 2006 to 2018, researchers found a decline in scores for certain cognitive abilities, including verbal reasoning and matrix reasoning. Interestingly, scores for spatial reasoning (3D rotation) showed an increase. This suggests a possible shift in the cognitive skills emphasized in modern American society, perhaps with a greater focus on STEM-related abilities over others.
A Brief History of IQ Testing
The concept of IQ testing has a long and, at times, controversial history in the United States. Early tests, adapted from the work of French psychologist Alfred Binet, were unfortunately used to support discriminatory practices. Modern IQ tests, such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV), are more nuanced and aim to measure a broader range of cognitive abilities.

What Do IQ Tests Actually Measure?
It's important to understand that an IQ score is not a measure of a person's inherent worth or overall intelligence. Instead, modern tests are designed to assess specific cognitive functions:
Verbal Comprehension: The ability to understand, use, and think with spoken language.
Perceptual Reasoning: The ability to think visually and solve non-verbal problems.
Working Memory: The ability to hold and manipulate information in the short term.
Processing Speed: The speed at which an individual can perform simple, automatic cognitive tasks.
